Details Make the Difference in Detroit
Once a year, we make the rainy, gray journey through the small towns of Ohio, past the Jeep factory in Toledo and the billowing smoke stacks of southern Michigan, to attend the North American International Auto Show.
This annual venture is not of my own desire. My boyfriend Adam has a thing for cars. I do not. So, we pair the car-heavy itinerary with stays in nice hotels, exploration of urban areas, and dinners in lovely restaurants.
I have to say: it's getting easier to find things I love in Detroit. It's incredible transformation has become an often-covered story in national media, but seeing improvements year-to-year is awe inspiring.
Let's talk about the hotel: the Detroit Foundation. Opening in April 2017, it was our first opportunity to spend a night here (previously having stayed at the Westin Book Cadillac and the Aloft David Whitney).
Detroit Foundation Hotel
The hotel does some really nice things to evaluate the design. They pay careful attention to detail in all of the small elements that make the experience exceptional.
The hotel forgoes the typical gross in-room coffee machine with these cute fuses, redeemable for a cup of coffee in the hotel restaurant, The Apparatus Room, named after the fire fighting equipment that was stored there in the building's former life.
There is also in-room retail, from custom-blended candles, wool blankets, and more.
Even the "home screen" on the TV takes the opportunity to tell a story about the brand, whisking viewers through scenes of renovation.
The view left a little to be desired, but the seeing the streets animated with excited car fans was a treat.
Overall, we really enjoyed our experience at the hotel, but what most surprised us was the intricate special touches, the hands-on service, the brand-right details. This hotel was ALL Detroit, and like it's home, will flourish in the future.
